Doesn’t it make you feel better that the dumb jock who got all the girls and gave you wedgies at lunch is still talking about high school because it was the highlight of his life? As he continues to brag about that last touchdown everyone cheered for, you drive around, Gucci suited in your Maserati and are thankful that you are so much better off now. Apparently health wise, you’re not. A Swedish research study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health recently suggests that social standing as a teenager has sometimes detrimental, long-term health consequences. Twenge and Co. Research found that today’s average college student scored higher than 65% of students in 1987 on the Narcissism Personality Inventory (NPI) test. Jean Twenge, an associate professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, attributes her findings to the changing of our country’s cultural beliefs. She claims this began to happen when the baby-boomer generation began to instill sayings in their children such as “believe in yourself and anything is possible,” “you must love yourself first before you love another,” and “you need to do what is right for you.” Ms. Twenge’s book “Generation Me: Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled — and More Miserable than Ever Before” describes the exponential growth of narcissism among people born after 1980. It wasn’t too long ago that parents everywhere were condemning the makers of games like Grand Theft Auto, saying that violence in video games isn’t necessary and providing the perfect forum for such timeless age-induced quotes as: “when I was a kid,” “back in my day,” and “that’s the problem with kids today.” Be first to comment this article |

When I was growing up, I had the ‘benefit’ of having an older cousin. Which just meant that I had a loosely related older person to play tricks on me and my siblings and I never really liked when we had to go play with THAT set of cousins. Anyway, back to the ‘benefit’ part. Like most families with a few kids, we didn’t exactly have cash bursting out of walls. So, I (undoubtedly like so many others) became the recipient of many hand-me-downs... Be first to comment this article |

Kimbo Slice - Internet Street Fighter When I was in elementary school, the best part of each day was (obviously) not school, but coming home right after. For the most part, I was good about jumping on my homework and getting it done, but there were those days where I felt less than productive. My non-productive activity of choice usually involved taking trips to a far away land where I fought monsters, collected coins, dove into random pipes, rescued damsels in distress and did it all vicariously through a horrifically stereotypical Italian plumber. Some things never change... Be first to comment this article |
